More Than A Name - Week 3

SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
January 31, 2026

Jehovah – Jireh

Jireh
“To See, To Inspect, To Perceive,
To Provide, To Consider
“To See To It”

Simply – “The Lord Will Provide”

Only Used Once In The Entire Bible
In Abraham’s Story, Genesis 22

Charles Spurgeon Said,
“The God Who Will See To It”

Genesis 12 – 75 Years Old

Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 12:1-3

Abram Is Between 75 – 85 Years Old

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”
Genesis 15:1-3

Abram Is 90 – 15 Years Have Passed

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.  So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
Genesis 16:1-2

God, You Don’t Understand!
You Must Need My Help!

What Happens When What God Has Promised To Do,
Doesn’t Match What Is Happening To Me?

Often: We Create A Problem,
Instead Of Trusting His Promise

“Ishmaels” Are The Product Of Not Trusting God’s Ways And God’s Timing

God Reiterates His Promise To Abram In Genesis 17

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Genesis 22:1-2

This Was Not About God Trying To Kill Isaac, It Was About God Killing Something In Abraham!

The Story Was Never Going To End With Isaac Dying But With Something In Abraham Dying

So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Genesis 22:3

Why Did Abraham Obey?

God Told Abraham To Leave His Homeland
God Gave Him A New Homeland

God Told Him To Leave His Extended Family
God Gave Him A Much Larger Family

God Told Abraham To Give Up The Best Land
He Received Better And More Land

God Told Abraham To Give Up
The Kings Of Sodom’s Reward
God Gave Abraham More Wealth

God Told Abraham To Give Up Ishmael
God Preserved Him And Made Ishmael The Father Of A Multitude

God Looks Forward And Provides

To Have God’s Sight

Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place (Moriah) afar off. And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”
Genesis 22:4-5

Two Steps To Obedience

Obedience Based On Compliance To God
I Obey Because You Are God!

Obedience Based On Confidence In God
I Obey Because You Are Good!

If God Promised It, Then I Can Believe It

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” concluding (reasoned) that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
Hebrews 11:17-19

So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Genesis 22:6-8

Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Genesis 22:9-10

But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
Genesis 22:11-12

Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; (Jehovah- Jireh) as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Genesis 22:13-14

How Did The Ram Get There?

It Was Climbing The Other Side.

God Will Provide For You

God Had The Ram Climbing In A Place Abraham Could Not See

Abraham Was Riding On A Donkey
Into The Future Jerusalem To Make A Sacrifice Of His One And Only Son.

The Wood Would Be On Isaac’s Shoulders.

Isaac Was A Willing Sacrifice.

Abraham Believed That God Would Provide.
And He Did…
