You Asked For It 2023 - Week 5

SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
December 2, 2023

Week 5
December 2, 2023

1. Proverbs 27:17 and Nehemiah 4:14 are just a couple verses that come to my mind when I think of my favorite verses. What are your favorite verses and why?

to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
Ephesians 3:19-20

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 10:10

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
John 10:27-28

2.While watching a show on Discovery (biblical mysteries explained) they talked about the lost gospels of Thomas and Peter. This got me wondering how early church leaders decided which texts were suitable for the Bible and why some early texts were left out. Could you elaborate on the formation of the Bible?

for prophecy (The Bible) never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

3. Should we as Christians spend time with blood relatives who are atheist and live selfish, narcissistic lives? As the Bible says we should not have fellowship with unbelievers. Particularly ones who refuse to hear sound doctrine. Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. “For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? Corinthians 6:14”

But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
2 Timothy 2:23-26

If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18

4. I’ve been coming for several years and something have always struggled with is preaching on prosperity. Never in my reading or throughout my studies can I find anywhere where Jesus tells anyone if they follow him they will have riches or anything of that nature. In fact Jesus says blessed are those that are poor for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Matthew 2:11

Jesus Had A Treasurer
Jesus Was Responsible For His Entire Team and Their Families

Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii (8 Months of Wages) worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
John 6:4-10

The Beatitudes

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:18-19

If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
Isaiah 1:19

“And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Deuteronomy 8:18

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8

Let them shout for joy and be glad, Who favor my righteous cause; And let them say continually, “Let the Lord be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.”
Psalms 35:27

5. How do we find out what God’s calling is on our lives? Do you think God will ultimately let us know where He needs us to be? I believe we will be where He wants us to be. I feel very strongly for a career that glorifies Him to help others with childhood trauma, addiction, mental abuse that God has got me through. There’s many avenues, I just don’t know right now. I just want to be where He wants me to be.

6. I recently became a Christian. I know and believe that Jesus died for me and I accept that gift. However, I don’t feel like I have a great love for Jesus like what I see in other Christians. I understand that love is important and I believe my love will grow over time, but for now I find it lacking. Am I still saved even if I don’t have enough love?

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Romans 10:8-10

7. I always love this series! But I’d love to know how to find answers to my questions when we aren’t doing You Asked For It. What’s the best way to find answers for myself?
