1 & 2 Timothy - 2 Timothy – Week 3

SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
August 2, 2026

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

2 Timothy Chapter 4

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season (“EUKAIROS” – Opportune Time) and out of season (“AKAIROS” – Inopportune Time). Convince (Prove Wrong), rebuke (Correct), exhort (Comfort), with all longsuffering and teaching.
2 Timothy 4:1-2

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching (Knetho – literally means “to scratch, to tickle”) ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4

The Preacher’s Job Is To Deliver The Mail!
Preach The Word!

Preach For The Approval Of God, And Not The Recognition Of Man

And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

But you be watchful in all things (“be constantly in a sober mood, calm, collected, wakeful, alert in all things”), endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
2 Timothy 4:5-6

I have fought (Greek – Agonizomai) the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7

The Agony Of The Victorious Christian Life Is A Lifelong Battle Against Demonic Forces, Temptation, The Flesh, Lies, Carnal People, And The Lust Of The World

Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
2 Timothy 4:8

Heavenly Crowns

The Crown Of Rejoicing (1 Thess 2:19)
The Crown Of Glory (1 Peter 5:4)
The Crown Of Life ( James 1:12, Rev 2:10)
The Incorruptible Crown ( 1 Cor 9:25)
The Crown Of Righteousness (2 Tim 4:8)

The Abandoned Apostle

Be diligent to come to me quickly (Third Mention); for Demas (3 Times) has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens (Only 1) for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia.
2 Timothy 4:9-10

Following Paul, Was No Easy Task

(Shipwrecked – Acts 24:27)
2 Years In Rome In Prison (Acts 28:30)
Paul Expected Complete Commitment And Loyalty To Him And The Mission

Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:59-62

What’s In It For Me Mentality

Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.
2 Timothy 4:11-12

Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work.  Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus; but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.
Acts 15:37-40

Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus (1 Time) at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments.
2 Timothy 4:13

Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words. At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them.
2 Timothy 4:14-16

“For he in an extraordinary manner set himself in opposition to our words.” We can be certain that Paul was not the type of person who just wished the worst for those who opposed him. This had to be an extraordinary opposition to the Gospel that went beyond Paul’s personal feelings. He felt this man was a threat to the Gospel; therefore, he spoke against him in the name of the Lord and told Timothy to beware of him too (see note 15 at 2 Timothy 4:15).
– The Wuest Translation Commentary

As Christians We Are Not To Be Cynical And Look For Problems In Everyone And In Everything. But When Actions Demand It, We Should Be Aware Of People Who Have A Proven Track Record Of Creating Problems Against The Ministry Of God And The People Of God.

The Lord Is Faithful

But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
2 Timothy 4:17-18

Paul was expressing his faith that regardless of what happened, the Lord would be with him and that he would ultimately triumph through Christ. Tradition tells us that Paul was beheaded by Nero (see note 1 at Acts 28:30), but that wasn’t the end of the matter. God received Paul into heaven, and Paul’s rewards for his faithfulness will be awesome. Nero will watch the Apostle Paul be rewarded while he himself is cast into the lowest hell. We are guaranteed to win if we hold fast our faith in Christ (Hebrews 10:23).

“I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!”
Hebrews 13:5b AMP

Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth, but Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.
2 Timothy 4:19-20

Do your utmost to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren.

Paul’s Farewell
The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
2 Timothy 4:21-22
