1 & 2 Timothy - 1 Timothy – Week 3

SPEAKER: Pastor Charlie Riley
June 13, 2026

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then, A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
1 Timothy 3:1-2

Bishop = Episkopos
3 Times Translated “bishop”
(1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:7, and 1 Peter 2:25)
1 Time Translated “bishops” (Philippians 1:1)
1 Time Translated “overseers” (Acts 20:28)

This term refers to the person in the
highest position of authority in the local church, or what we would call the
Senior/Lead/Head pastor.

Blameless – “Greek – Anepileptos
“cannot be laid hold of”

Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon

Unrebukeable Or Must Have
A Good Reputation

The Husband Of One Wife
Literal Translation – “a one-woman man”
Meaning: Divorce Or Polygamy

Converts Would At Times Have Multiple Wives But This Was Not Allowed Among The Leadership

Women As Bishops (Senior/Lead/Head pastor)

First, if the bishop is to be the husband of one wife, then many believe this eliminates women from the position of pastor. Others believe this interpretation is too strict, and this is no different from other passages where the male gender is used to refer to mankind, male and female included. There are scriptural examples of women in ministry but not specifically the pastorate. It’s a matter of interpretation.

A Woman As Senior/Lead/Head Pastor
IMPORTANT!!!!! This Is My Opinion!
Women In Ministry – Yes
Women Ministering From The Platform – Yes
Women Teaching Women – Yes
Women Teaching Men – Yes
Women As Pastors, Teachers, Prophets – Yes
Women As A Bishop (Lead Pastor) – No

Women In Ministry: Its Not A Matter Of Biblical Authority, But Rather Biblical Interpretation

2 Reasons I Believe This

Strong Men Vs. Passive Men
Family Salvation

not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children (Not Adults) in submission with all reverence
(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);
1 Timothy 3:3-5

not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same
condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
1 Timothy 3:6-7

Deacons – Greek “Diakonos”

Literal Meaning
An Attendant, A Waiter

Came To Mean
A Servant In The Church

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.
1 Timothy 3:8-10

Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 3:11-13

Bishops

1) They Must Be Vigilant
2) They Must Be Sober
(Meaning Self-Controlled)
3) They Must Have Good Behavior
4) They Must Be Hospitable
5) They Must Be Apt To Teach
6) They Must Be “no striker”; i.e., Gentle
(see note 13 at 1 Timothy 3:3).
7) They Must Be Patient
8) They Must Not Be Brawlers
9) They Must Not Be Covetous
10) They Must Have A Good Report
From Unbelievers

Only Deacons

1) They Must Be Reverent
2) They Must Not Be “double-tongued”
3) They Must Hold The Mystery
Of The Faith In A Pure Conscience

Both Bishops And Deacons

1) They Both Are To Be Blameless
2) Both Are To Be “the husband of one wife”
3) Both Are To Rule Their Homes Well
4) They Cannot Be Given To Wine
5) They Cannot Be In It For The Money
6) They Cannot Be Novices In The Faith

Wives Of Deacons

1) They Must Be Reverent
2) They Must Not Be Slanderers
3) They Must Be Sober
(Meaning Self-Controlled)
4) They Must Be Faithful

These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:14-15

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
1 Timothy 3:16
