The Artemis Temple was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. Artemis of Ephesus was a goddess of fertility who was depicted with eggs or multiple breasts. She is different from the Greek goddess of the hunt. She is depicted as a multi-faceted figure with a temple crown on her head and a crescent moon on her brow. She was the protector of the city and people who came to Ephesus would see her temple before anything else.

SOZO literally means “to keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction” (Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon).

Therefore, the women being saved in childbearing refers to physical and emotional well-being, not the forgiveness of sins. This scripture promises to the couple who are seeking the Lord safe delivery of their child.

Misinterpretation of this verse is where the Mormons get their authority for polygamy. They believe that women are saved (forgiveness of sins) through childbirth. Therefore, men are obligated to marry as many women as possible and have children with them. That, of course, is not what this verse is teaching.

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
